WILL

I watched the city pass as I sat in the back of my chauffeured car, the events of the meeting still playing over and over again.

Once back at my penthouse, I fell onto the couch and let out a sigh of mild frustration. I was ready to crack open a bottle of wine, have a couple of glasses, and try to calm down from what had happened.

Right at the moment I sat down, however, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a message from Emma.

“Hey!” she said. “You cool? You left the office in kind of a rush.”

I had, and I regretted it somewhat. I should’ve been able to put the meeting behind me, to not have gotten shaken by Sarah’s words.

But I wasn’t able to shake it off. I knew I needed to get away from work, to be alone for a time.

“Yes,” I said. “Needed some time to process the meeting.”

Her response came quickly. “I bet,” she said.

For a few moments, nothing else. I began to wonder if she wasn’t sure how to talk to me, or if she realized that she was potentially crossing boundaries by having a casual conversation with her boss.

Then again, crossing boundaries seemed to be something that Emma and I were getting very, very good at.

“You want some company?” she asked. “We could swap notes.”

I wasn’t sure if this was yet another of the day’s euphemisms, or a genuine desire to work. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that spending some time with Emma sounded like just what I needed.

And not only in a sexual way. Being around her was…nice. She made me feel calm, at ease, in a way that I’d always had a hard time allowing myself.

“Sure,” I said. “You know where I live.”

“I sure do ;) Be there in a few.”

As soon as I set my phone down, a warm feeling ran through me. It was strange. I’d always taken pride in my ability to be alone, to not need to rely on anyone to make me feel complete.

But there was something about Emma, something she added to my life that I couldn’t ignore. And it wasn’t simply her skills as an assistant.

After throwing on some mellow jazz—some older John Coltrane—I headed to the kitchen and opened up a bottle of wine. As I sipped, I realized that an odd feeling was taking hold of me.

Impatience.

It was a very unfamiliar feeling, almost alien. In fact, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt it since before Richard had trained it out of me. It made me feel young, like some overeager teenager who couldn’t wait for what he wanted.

And it was Emma who was inspiring the sentiment. I didn’t want to wait any longer for her. I wanted her there with me right then.

I checked my watch, seeing how much time had passed since my last text with Emma. It’d been around thirty minutes, and I wasn’t sure what was taking her so long to get here.
